AVOID Test Flight Published in Scientific Communications

The AVOID test flight which took place in October 2013 was a significant leap forwards for the aviation industry.

History made with the generation of the first ever artificial cloud of volcanic ash at flight levels by dispersing Icelandic ash from the back of a circling A400M.  Furthermore, despite the relatively small scale of this artificial ash cloud (when compared to real volcanic emissions), the AVOID instrument was able to make a successful detection in flight.

The results of the test flight have now been published in the prestigious peer-reviewed journal, Scientific Reports, which can be accessed here.
